Over 100 years ago, a group of boating enthusiasts founded our beloved club. The scenic beauty, maritime heritage and steady breeze made Mattapoisett an ideal spot. As the years passed surprisingly little has changed. The boats may have shifted from Herreshoff’s to Beetle Cats to Ensigns and beyond. However, the core of any great club is its membership.
In 2014, we hope to build on our successes and continue the legacy that has been laid before us. In recent years we’ve expanded our social calendar with off season “rendezvous”, cookouts and of course, our signature “Stir-it-up” sunset cocktail socials. Similarly we have expanded our racing endeavors. Now complementing our always popular Wednesday Night PHRF series, we have added a one design series on Tuesday nights. We’ve also extended our reach beyond our harbor. Members of the Mattapoisett Yacht Club have sponsored a new charity regatta in Buzzards Bay. Our members have represented the club in the Ensign, J/24 and J/30 championship regattas in recent years. The club also looks forward to defending its Chowder Cup title against rival Angelica Yacht Club in 2014.
But obviously, these great events are not possible without a great membership. During my time as a flag officer our membership has grown in size and enthusiasm. Members have donated their time, money, energy and skills to help keep our club thriving. As I enter my last season as commodore I can say that it is my absolute privilege to have my name listed with Parsons, Stackpole and Donald. It has been my privilege to work with the membership to help create an exciting club experience and do my part to help sustain this historic and important club. As this mailing reaches you, I hope it finds you enthusiastic to not only get out on the water but to be a pilot that helps guide The Mattapoisett Yacht Club on to the next generation of boating enthusiasts.
